The Hero!!

Another Monday morning, the nature is all set to welcome a beautiful day. The sun rays have peeped into the room, through window grills – bending downwards to touch the floor. I can see some smoke or dust in the air – shining bright in that spot light. Regardless, this frame have become a routine scene for me – I haven’t moved even an inch for the past few months, but always felt refreshing at this sight. Like everyone’s morning routine I also had a look at the mirror placed against me. It reflected back me and my thoughts. I lost my glow. The scar on my left forehead is more visible now. Staring at the mirror for a few minutes made me feel like taking a walk through the memories. The days that are not likely to repeat in future.

ഭാഗ്യക്കുറി…

ഒരല്‍പം ഭാഗ്യ പരീക്ഷണവും ഒപ്പം ഒരു ചെറിയ സഹായവും. വഴിയരികില്‍ സൈക്കിളില്‍ ലോട്ടറി കച്ചവടം നടത്തുന്ന വികലാംഗനെ കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ അയാള്‍ മനസ്സിലോര്‍ത്തു.

“സാറേ, ഒരു കാരുണ്യ എടുക്കട്ടെ? ഒരു കോടിയാണ് .”
“അടിക്കുവോ ?”
“എപ്പോ അടിച്ചെന്ന് ചോദിച്ചാ മതി സാറേ. ഇത്‌ നല്ല രാശിയുള്ള കയ്യാണ് . സാറൊന്ന് എടുത്തു നോക്കണം.”
“ശെരി. ഒന്നെടുത്തോ? വലിയ പ്രതീക്ഷയൊന്നുമില്ല. പിന്നെ തനിക്കൊരു സഹായമായിക്കോട്ടെ എന്ന് കരുതിയാണ്.”
“ദാ സാറേ. ടിക്കറ്റ്.”
“എത്രയാ?”
“നൂറു രൂപാ.”
“ഓഹ് ! നൂറു രൂപയോ? അതിത്തിരി കടുത്തു പോയല്ലോടോ. ഇതാ പൈസ. എന്നാ നറുക്കെടുപ്പ്?”
“നാളെ ഉച്ചക്കാണ്‌. മറ്റെന്നാളത്തെ പേപ്പറില്‍ വരും.”

A picture is worth a thousand words.ഒരു ചിത്രത്തിനു ഒരുപാട് പറയാന്‍ കഴിയും, മറ്റു ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ചില വാക്കുകള്‍ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഒരു നോട്ടം അതിലേറെ പറയും. എന്നാല്‍ ചില നേരങ്ങളില്‍ വാക്കിനും വരയ്ക്കും അതിന്റെ ദൗത്യം നിറവേറ്റാന്‍ സാധിക്കാതെ വരും. എറിയാന്‍ അറിയാവുന്നവനു ദൈവം വല്ലപ്പോഴുമെങ്കിലും വടി കൊടുക്കും പക്ഷേ എപ്പോള്‍ എങ്ങനെ എറിയണമെന്നു പറയാതിരിക്കുന്നത്‌ പോലെ!

അന്നും പതിവു പോലെ അയാള്‍ വെറുതെ ഫേസ്ബുക്കില്‍ സമയം കളയുകയായിരുന്നു. പലരുടെയും പോസ്റ്റുകളില്‍ ലൈക്ക് അടിച്ചും കമന്റിട്ടും പേജിനു നീളമേറി വന്നു. കൂട്ടത്തില്‍ പഴയൊരു സഹപാഠിയുടെ കല്യാണം കഴിഞ്ഞതും അറിയാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു. കല്യാണം വിളിച്ചത്‌ ഫേസ്ബുക്കില്‍ ആയത്‌ കൊണ്ട്‌ പോയില്ല. എന്നാലും അതിനും കൊടുത്തു ഒരു ലൈക്ക്, ‘Give Likes & Take Likes’ അതാണ് പോളിസി. പിന്നെ ഇപ്പോള്‍ പരിഭവവും പ്രതിഷേധവും എല്ലാം ഫേസ്ബുക്കില്‍ ആണല്ലോ. കല്യാണ ഫോട്ടോസ് നോക്കുന്നതിനിടയില്‍ യാദൃച്ചികമായി (എന്നു ഉറപ്പിച്ചു പറയാന്‍ പറ്റില്ല) ഒരു മുഖം അയാളുടെ ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍ പെട്ടു.

Heads or Tails

ദോ അവിടെ വഴി രണ്ടായി പിരിയുന്നു. ഇടത്തോട്ടു പോയിട്ട്‌ ഒരു കാര്യവുമില്ല. വലത്തോട്ടു പോയാല്‍ എങ്ങുമെത്തില്ല, വഴി അവിടെ തീരുന്നില്ല, പക്ഷേ കേബിളുകാര്‍ റോഡ്‌ മുഴുവന്‍ കുഴിച്ചിട്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. റോഡില്‍ ടാറിട്ടാല്‍ അതിന്റെ അടുത്ത ആഴ്ച തന്നെ അവരവിടെ കുഴിച്ചിരിക്കും, എന്നിട്ടു 2 ദിവസത്തേക്ക്‌ റോഡ്‌ ക്ലോസ്ഡ് എന്ന ബോര്‍ഡ് വയ്ക്കും. പക്ഷേ പോകേണ്ടത്‌ വലത് വശത്തേക്കാണ്‌. യാത്ര ഒരു ചെറിയ ഇട വഴിയിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു വിട്ടു. അല്പം താമസിച്ചു പോയി. എന്നാലും പോയി നോക്കാം. ഇന്നലെ വല്ലാത്ത ഒരു ദിവസമായിരുന്നു, ജീവിതത്തില്‍ ഇത്രയും അടി വാങ്ങിയ ഒരു ദിവസം മുമ്പ് ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല. കാഴ്ച്ചക്കാരായും അടിക്കുന്നവനെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കാനായും ഒരുപാടു പേര്‍, ഓരോ അടിക്കു ശേഷവും ഒരു ഉയര്‍ത്തെഴുന്നേല്‍പ്പ് പ്രതീക്ഷ മാത്രമായി എരിഞ്ഞടങ്ങി. ന്യായാധിപനും നിയമങ്ങളും അവനെ അനുകൂലിച്ചു. ഒടുവില്‍ അക്കങ്ങള്‍ കണക്കു കൂട്ടിയപ്പോള്‍ ജയം അവന്റെ പക്ഷത്തായിരുന്നു. എന്തൊക്കെയാണെങ്കിലും പിന്മാറാന്‍ ഒരുക്കമല്ലാത്തതിനാല്‍ വീണ്ടും….

The new water management system made the water table level to rise immensely and made the farmers feel the life of land. The little rainfall it receives is trapped and stored into the soil. Once they need to dig 80-125 feet for water in wells and now it’s available within the range of 15-40 feet. The changes done as a result of the team effort of villagers brought back the green with a smile.

The villagers take pride in keeping their home and surroundings clean. The widespread disease has become a thing of the past. Babool trees that were earlier cut for fuel are now cared for, harvesting its gum that sells for Rs. 2,000 per kg. The fields are lush with maize, jowar, bajra, onions and potatoes.

New Plans!!!

Jeet began by asking the villagers to become proactive towards creating their paradigms for development. The first step was to treasure the water resources that were neither measured nor managed well. For that Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) was implemented.

In 1994, the gram sabha approached 12 agencies to implement watershed works under EGS. The village prepared its own five-year plan for 1995-2000 for ecological regeneration. The plan was the basis on which EGS was implemented. It ensured that all departments implementing projects in the village had an integrated plan. The District Social Forestry Department also helped Devgiri with EGS for building contour trenches across the village hillocks and planting trees on forestland; villagers were persuaded to stop grazing there. The village built around 40,000 contour trenches around the hills to conserve rainwater and recharge groundwater. Villagers took up plantation and forest regeneration activities. They avoided crops like sugarcane and bananas, which require a high use of water.

ശരീരത്തിനു ഒട്ടും ഭാരം തോന്നുന്നില്ല. കണ്ണ് തുറന്നു നോക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മുന്നില്‍ ഭീമാകാരമായ 2 കവാടങ്ങള്‍, മര്യാദക്ക് പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ വലിയ 2 വാതിലുകള്‍. രണ്ടും അടഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുകയാണ്. വലത് വശത്തെ വാതിലില്‍ അല്പം മാറാലയും പൊടിയും ഒക്കെയുണ്ട്, തുറന്നിട്ട്‌ ഒരുപാടു നാളുകള്‍ ആയത്‌ പോലെ. ഒന്നു കൂടി സൂക്ഷിച്ചു നോക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു കാര്യം മനസിലായി, വാതിലുകള്‍ക്ക് താക്കോല്‍ പഴുതില്ല, ATM കൗന്ടെറില്‍ കാണുന്നത്‌ പോലെ കാര്‍ഡ് ഇടാന്‍ വേണ്ടി നെടുകെ നീളത്തില്‍ 2 ദ്വാരങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രം, വാതിലുകള്‍ക്ക് നടുക്കായി കൊത്തു പണികള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു കസേരയും മേശയും. മുന്നില്‍ മേശയുള്ളത് കൊണ്ട്‌ സിംഹാസനം എന്നു പറയാന്‍ പറ്റില്ല.

അടുത്തേക്ക്‌ ചെന്നപ്പോള്‍ കസേരയില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപെട്ടു. പുരാണ സീരിയലുകളില്‍ കാണുന്ന മന്ത്രിയുടേത് പോലുള്ള വസ്ത്രധാരണം.

Jeet got elected as the new sarpanch of Devgiri and that too unopposed. That’s all about election.

Ever since he became the head of the village, he decided to know the village more. He decided to travel and see the unseen pictures of his village. He wandered through the village, visiting every house on his way and making friends with every villager he saw. He asked them about their problems and needs. He always tried to make the villagers solve their own problems instead of seeking someone else’s help.

അവറാച്ചന്‍…!!!

ആ വീട്ടില്‍ നിന്നിറങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ രമേശന്‍ നായരുടെ കണ്ണുകള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. അവര്‍ ഒരുമിച്ചു പഠിച്ചവരോ ജോലി ചെയ്തവരോ അയല്‍ക്കാരോ ഒന്നുമല്ലായിരുന്നു. ഒരുപാടു വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ ഒരേ ട്രെയിനില്‍ സഹായാത്രികരായി യാത്ര ചെയ്തപ്പോള്‍ കിട്ടിയ സൗഹൃദം. എപ്പോള്‍ കണ്ടാലും “രമേശന്‍ സാറേ” “എന്താണു അവറാന്‍ സാര്‍” എന്നു തുടങ്ങുന്ന സംസാരം. എല്ലാ പ്രവര്‍ത്തി ദിവസവും ഒരു മണിക്കൂര്‍ രാവിലെയും വയ്കുന്നേരവും ട്രെയിന്‍ യാത്ര. രണ്ടു പേര്‍ക്കും കുടുംബം വിട്ടു നില്‍ക്കാന്‍ താല്‍പര്യമില്ലായിരുന്നു. ചൂളം വിളികള്‍ക്കിടയിലും സന്തോഷവും സങ്കടവും പരസ്പരം പറഞ്ഞു തീര്‍ത്ത ഒരുപാടു യാത്രകള്‍. കാലം അതിന്റെ വഴിക്ക്‌ പോയി, പിന്നെ തിരിച്ചു വന്നില്ല.
